I live in the desert where summer highs can reach 110 degrees so when we’re not running from one air conditioned place to another our outdoor activities include pools and splash pads, or we’re escaping to a beach.
Growing up SPF was never on my mind, but once I became a skin care professional and saw the damage that the sun can do, despite how much melanin you have, protecting my skin became an important part of my skin care regime. But, not all SPFs are brown skin friendly so I am very particular on what I use because walking around with an ashy or purple tone skin is not cute. So here’s what I’m currently using…..

Mario Badescu Oil Free Moisturizer in SPF 30 is my daily moisturizer. I love it because it’s light, so on days when my skin is oily it’s my stand alone day time moisturizer and on days when I’m feeling dry I can layer it over another moisturizer to give myself more hydration.
I normally don’t even touch physical sun blocks because they are usually to blame for that undesirable ash, but Image Skincare Prevention + Daily Matte Moisturizer blends well. This is my go to SPF when I’m spending the day outside. A little goes a long way with this product and because all SPFs should be reapplied every two hours my skin doesn’t feel greasy after a day of multiple applications thanks to it being mattifying.
Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid-Lotion Suncreen SPF 30 is what I use for those rare days when my face will actually touch the water. Yes, I’m one of those people who don’t like getting my face wet but on those occasions I prefer a water resistant formula.
Trader Joe’s Spray Suncreen 50+ was a random purchase while out grocery shopping that’s turned out to be a favorite. I prefer sprays for my body SPFs for easy application and like this one because it feels light and not drying.
I also love my big hats, sunglasses, and finding shade for extra protection.
